What is 5G Technology

1. What is 5G?

5G is the 5th generation mobile network. It is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. 5G enables a new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices.

The fifth generation of wireless technology promises more than just a faster network. It will help redefine the network, establishing a new global wireless standard for speed, throughput and bandwidth. A 5G network builds a bridge to the future.

2. What are the differences between the previous generations of mobile networks and 5G?

The previous generations of mobile networks are 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G.

First Generation -1G

  • 1980s: 1G The first analog cell phones enter the world. Mobile networks have seen a major transformation since the launch of the first-generation mobile services, which were capable of transmitting only voice calls

Second Generation – 2G

  • Early 1990s: New features like SMS and voicemail come to mobile handsets. 2G was digitalization of 1G. it used the digital signal for communication (launched in 1991). 2G used TDMA (Time-Division Multiple Access) and CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access for dividing the channels and 2G provided voice plus data communication services.

Third Generation – 3G

  • Early 2000s: Higher data transfer rates enable mobile web browsing, image sharing and GPS location-tracking. 3G actually stands for “third generation”, as it is the third type of access technology that has been made widely commercially available for connecting mobile phones

Fourth Generation – 4G

  • 2010s:  4G is the fourth generation of mobile phone technology. It follows on from 3G (third generation) and 2G (second generation) mobile technology. 3G may not be sufficient to meet needs of future high-performance applications like multi-media, full-motion video, wireless teleconferencing.Broadband delivers deep web functionality to our smartphones.
